Shawn Achor, an American happiness researcher and best-selling author, discovered after years of research that…

“Success does not bring happiness, but happiness brings success.”

After 15 years of selling to large companies, I couldn’t agree more.

Being positive is essential when it comes to sales and being an entrepreneur.

The ups and downs are inevitable.

Being happy during the journey allows us to keep going, stay mentally fit and be creative to capture any potential opportunities.

So, choose to be happy!

Ok, I know you must be asking yourself the next question:

How do I stay positive when things get tough?

Here are some simple tips that might help you.

Pick a few that you can adopt right away and start becoming happier!

1. Be grateful.

All right, I know that may sound a bit wishy-washy. If you know me, you know that I am usually not a wishy-washy kind of gal.

Since we’re talking about sales here, I’m not asking you to be grateful for your life or important people around you. (Although I think you should be.)

Instead, I’m talking about being grateful for what you have accomplished in sales.

As women, we are often over-critical of what we have accomplished.

“I have not closed enough sales.”
“The prospect is not replying to my emails.”

These negative thoughts can be demotivating.

Instead, focus on the positive and be grateful for the small successes you see in your sales journey.

Be grateful for every action you take in sales.
Be grateful that you have many LinkedIn connections.

Focus on the positive aspects of your sales success, regardless of how small they are.

These will be the fuel to your future success.

2. Focus on the “Why”

Why did you create your own business?
To spend more time with your family?
To have more freedom?
To take control of your own destiny?

Regardless of the reasons, don’t lose sight of them.

I like to take the first 5 minutes of my work day to remind myself why I do what I do.

I want to help as many women as possible make a huge impact in this world.

So, what’s your “why”

3. Give yourself a happiness boost.

The great Zig Ziglar once said,

People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.

It’s the same with happiness!

So, always be ready to give yourself a boost of happiness throughout your day.

What are your simple pleasures?
Mine is listening to music, having a small portion of chocolate, a great cup of coffee and seeing my kids’ faces.

So, throughout the day, I fill my time with these little happy boosts to keep me motivated and HAPPY!

4. Know yourself.

The next step to staying motivated is to know yourself.

What makes you happy?
What makes you less happy?

If you have trouble answering these questions, try journaling your emotions throughout the day for 7 days!

5. Have a support system

I absolutely love my job. I love knowing about different industries. I love working with female entrepreneurs. I also love the challenge of selling big accounts.

But let’s be real. Sometimes, life gets hectic and it’s easy to get swept away by all sorts of circumstances.

As an example, in the past, I was always working and started to neglect the important relationships I had.
I stopped spending time with my best friends… because I was too busy.
I stopped meeting new people… because I did not have time for it.

And before I realized it, I was feeling down all the time.
I started to lose the passion I had for work.

Then, a friend of mine brought me back to the networking group I belonged to.

Within 10 minutes of being in the group, I felt energized again.

Only then did I realize the importance of support in sales.

So, have a support system that keeps you motivated every step of the way!
